Universal columns (often called ‘I-sections’ or ‘H-sections’) are the most commonly used section for structural steel purposes. These are ideal load bearing beams when height is limited (which is quite often the case in residential projects).
The UC’s width is roughly equal to their depth. For example 152x152x23 (width x depth x weight). Sometimes this is simply written as 152 UC 23 where the last number, 23 in this example, is the weight per metre in kilograms.
